Since you'll be getting in late, head over to Barrio for some tacos and margs. Their kitchen closes at 1am. For a pub-vibe, try Portsmouth Brewery. They stop taking food orders at 11pm.

Grab coffee and a croissant at Elephantine Bakery to start the day. They serve amazing artisanal French baked goods.

explore downtown

Explore downtown Portsmouth. There are a few cute shops along Market Street along the water. A few stores of note: Bliss Boutique, Pickwick's Mercantile, Stonewall Kitchen, Book & Bar. Make your way to Market Square to see the center of downtown.

For lunch, snack on fresh seafood at one of the many seafood spots in town. Jumpin' Jay's Fish Cafe and Surf are two of the best. There's also a Row 34, the sister of the one in Boston.

As the 3rd oldest city in US, there are lots of historic homes (Moffatt-Ladd, Warner House, Strawberry Banke Museum with 10-acres of homes from the 1600s). While they close for tours in October, you can still take a look and may be able to roam the outside grounds.

GREAT BAY NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

For some time outside, drive over to the Great Bay Refuge where you'll find a few trails like The Ferry Way or Peverly Pond pedestrian hikes.

One of Travel & Leisure's best ice cream places in America, Anabelle's a must for ice-cream lovers. Before you leave the town, try it. Joe Biden and his campaign recently stopped here while on the road.
